Sierra Star: Oakhurst 100th birthday

Centennial Committee
(Updated: Thursday, January 5, 2012)

Oakhurst will celebrate its birthday Feb. 28, celebrating 100 years since the town's name was officially changed from Fresno Flats to Oakhurst -- an occasion that will be commemorated throughout the entire year.

During the past year, a committee of Oakhurst Area Chamber of Commerce members has been meeting to plan for the yearlong celebration of Oakhurst Centennial. The Oakhurst Area Chamber of Commerce will provide a Centennial birthday cake at each of its events throughout the year. The birthday celebration will kick off at the chamber installation dinner Friday, Jan. 13 at the Golden Chain Theatre with historian Bill Coate as the featured speaker.

The committee hopes that the community will come together with their own ways to celebrate during the 100th year. Fresno Flats Village and History Center has had shirts made commemorating the 100th year anniversary of Oakhurst and has offered their facility for any centennial events.

Along with the publication of the Sierra Telephone directory, commemorating the 100th year, the Chamber of Commerce 2012 Membership Directory also contains historical photographs and stories and is a special keepsake.

Many events throughout the year are being planned including a Golden Chain Theatre melodrama about the name change from Fresno Flats to Oakhurst on Feb. 28. Special souvenir mementos will also be available.

"This is an Oakhurst community celebration," said Sandy Brinley, committee chair. "Come join in the fun and create your own Oakhurst 100th Anniversary event. Notify the Chamber and get on the list of events soon to be published with sponsorship support from the Yosemite Sierra Visitors Bureau and Sierra Telephone."

The community is invited to celebrate by using the centennial banner when publishing information or holding an event. The banner, in PDF format can be obtained from the chamber web site
